Why is there always "end of the world" dates?

With 2012 swarming around pop culture for a while now and the new Camping rapture prediction of May 21st, 2011. What's with all the end of the world predictions all the time, do people crave the world ending? Do they want it or is it just to instill fear for no apparent reason?
